WOMEN’S SERVICE LEAGUE

Hood County Chapter

NEWSLETTER, December, 2012

Hooray, hooray, I have an extra weekend to decorate before the holidays officially begin.  Thank goodness!! Our membership really swings into action during the month of December. If you are not involved with one of our active projects and want to be, please call me and I will direct you to the right person. (817-326-8231). All of us have special talents and gifts and can help others in so many ways. We need volunteers for bell ringing, prison ministry team, blanket delivery to elderly in nursing homes, closet inventory, and Christmas for Children. Many churches and other organizations have angel trees and I know many of our members want to adopchildren for Christmas.

I hope you will plan to visit the Granbury Square on Saturday, December 1, to hear the Salvation Army brass ensemble play. We are fortunate to have them come spend the day with us here in Granbury. Our ladies will be there ringing the bells so come out and support them.

And, don’t forget our Christmas luncheon on December 11, 11:30, at the home of Linda Frost in Decordova Bend Estates. There is no charge for the luncheon and you don’t have to bring anything!  We will, however, have a place for you to donate to Salvation Army Women’s Service League in support of our projects in Hood County if you so desire.

I think I have shared this devotion from Rick Warren before, but it speaks to me every time I read it. “If you will begin giving yourself to others, sharing what things you do have, sharing your time and your talents, you will find yourself learning to be content. Helping others will give you an appreciation for what you have and who you are, but more importantly, God designed you to serve and share with others. Until you do that, you will never be truly content. Real servants don’t serve for the approval or applause of others. They are content to live for an audience of One. They are content with quietly serving God. God put you where you are for a purpose!”

Have a blessed holiday and Merry Christmas!

Sally Timmons, President

Three Cheers are in Order!

These lovely ladies have brought in at least two new members since September and will be honored at the Christmas luncheon with that coveted red visor:  Elaine Tompkins, Donna Noyes, Joan Doolittle, Joyce Bianucci, Kathy Hanlon and Shirley Anderson.  If there are any more of you that have done the same, let Janet Hanna know before December 4.  She can be reached at:  janet.hanna@edwardjones.com

Ring A Ding!

We still need bell ringers on December 15 and 22nd.  If you can volunteer, contact Amy Russell at 817-910-1112.

Service Projects

Things are really humming along for the holidays.  Our blankets are at the monogramers, and we are ready to go shopping for the two families we have from the prison ministries.  We have added pre-k sizes to our GISD closet so we will be fulfilling the needs of these youngsters. Christmas for Children needs volunteers to help get bags sorted and filled starting next week.  They are already behind their schedule as they got the children’s names late.  Please call Susan Frost at 817-360-3136 or simply show up at the 301 Hannaford Street location any weekday from now until December 17.  Then they will be sorting and putting those 3,000 or so bags in order for pick-up at Stone Water Church.  It’s quite organized and really very rewarding to help in any of these capacities, so please find time to volunteer.

We will be doing an inventory in January at the GISD and boy, do we need it. The shoe closet is a mess!  Hopefully we can get that all straightened up as well as learn what we need to replace.  More to come after Christmas.

Just a Reminder!

Our website, www.saserviceleagueofhoodcounty.org is a year old now.  Visit it and see all the interesting ways to donate, to serve and to enjoy.  Aren’t you glad you did!!

“Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others.” (1Peter 4:10a)

As I reflect on this scripture, I am reminded of the ladies in Salvation Army Women’s Service League. We are a group with unique abilities, talents, and gifts. God gave you talents to benefit others, not yourself. Whether you are a musician, teacher, leader, or cook, God gave you those abilities to serve others. Are you using what He’s given you for the benefit of others to make the world a better place?

During November and December, we need committed, enthusiastic volunteers to help serve those in greatest need in our community. Come to the November meeting to get involved. We need volunteers to distribute lap blankets to elderly nursing home residents. We need volunteers to help sort, pack and distribute toys for the Christmas for Children drive.  We need bell ringers. We need members to serve on the Christmas luncheon committee. We need volunteers to help with the prison ministry. And we need YOU to be involved. I look forward to seeing you at our next meeting on Tuesday, November 13, at De Cordova Country Club.

NEWSLETTER

www.saserviceleagueofhoodcounty.org (new website)                         March, 2012

President’s Message

I hope you saw the picture of our group in the Hood County News last week. A group of 28 ladies traveled to Midlothian on February 14 to visit Camp Hoblitzelle. We took a riding tour of the camp and had a delicious meal in the dining room. We presented Major Stephanie Sills with a check for $5,000! Some of us even came home with a “bus prize.” Our group was impressed the beauty, cleanliness, and variety of activities provided at the camp. Our goal for this spring will be to publicize and accept applications for children from Hood County to attend camp in July. Joyce Brock is the chairperson of the camp committee and she can use help getting information from parents and following up with the families; so, if you can help, let Joyce know.

Our nominating committee has been busy at work. The slate of officers for next year will be announced at the March meeting. We will vote in April and the new officers will be installed in May. Thanks to Linda Silver and her committee for their hard work.

Rhonda Rogers from Mission Granbury will be our speaker in March. I look forward to her presentation and showing us ways we can be of further help to those in need in Hood County. Many more service opportunities are opening up for our group. We should have more information about these service opportunities at the March meeting.

I came across this daily devotional today and thought I would share it with you because I think it reflects what our group is all about. “Encouragement from one another gives us the strength to do what we feel we cannot do, hold on when we feel we cannot hold on, and try what we might not dare to try. Encouragement. Doesn’t sound like much, but it’s everything. Send some encouragement today. You’ll be part of someone’s memories for a long time.” (Copied from God’s Words of Life)

“An anxious heart weighs a man down, but a kind word cheers him up.” Proverbs 12:25

I look forward to seeing you on March 13!

Blessings,

WOMEN’S SERVICE LEAGUE

Hood County Chapter

NEWSLETTER, February, 2012

President’s Message:

News from the Executive Board: The Executive Board met on January 10 at DeCordova Country Club. We had a very productive meeting! The Board voted to give a contribution of $5,000.00 to Camp Hoblitzelle. This matches the amount we gave last year. We look forward to helping children ages 10-12 from Hood County go to summer camp this year. Joyce Brock and her committee will be accepting possible candidates soon. I know some of you work with children who may be in need of this opportunity so please give the names to Joyce Brock. Right now we don’t know how many we can send, but we want to be ready!

Donna Thorstenson and her committee will be doing an inventory of “the closet” at Granbury ISD on February 10 at 10:00 am.  The inventory will take place at the previous Christmas for Children location, 301 Hannaford, right behind Decker Gym.  She needs a “few good ladies” to meet her there.  Please email her at thorstenson@windstream.net or call her at 817-326-1413 and say, “Count me in!!”  It is very important that this inventory is complete so we will know how to budget for the Clothes Closet for next year.  Right now, we are getting ready to supply the closet with additional shoes, hygiene kits, lice shampoo, socks and underwear to suffice until school is out in May.

If you haven’t sent your check for the field trip to Camp Hoblitzelle on February 14, do so asap.  We have reserved the bus and need for those that previously signed up and have not paid to send $27.00 to Donna Noyes, 3808 Fairway, Granbury 76049. Make the check payable to Salvation Army Women’s Service League. It covers the bus and lunch at the camp.  We will leave DCBE at 9:00 and arrive at the camp around 10:15.  After touring the facilities, eating lunch and presenting the $5,000 check we will be back in Granbury around 1:30.

Linda Silver has agreed to be the chair for the 2012-13 nominating committee. Thanks, Linda! Her committee includes Donna Roessler, Debbie Wiley, and Janet Hanna. If you would like to serve as an officer next year or nominate someone to serve, please write Linda  at hihogram5@charter.net or one of the other members on the committee.  The committee will present the nominations in March; we will vote in April and have the installation of officers in May.

I am so grateful to all of you for making 2011 such a momentous year. We have truly made a difference in the lives of many people in Hood County. I look forward to seeing you February 14 or at the next regularly scheduled meeting March 13. Rhonda Rogers from Mission Granbury will be our speaker.

WOMEN’S SERVICE LEAGUE

                 Hood County Chapter

NEWSLETTER, January, 2012

President’s Message

What a blessed year we have had! The Women’s Service League continues to grow and our influence is spreading throughout our community. Everywhere I go people want to know more about us and our work in Granbury. What an outstanding group of women! Where do I begin to tell you how much you are appreciated? Here are some of our accomplishments in December.

December was a very eventful month for our organization. Donna Thorstenton and her committee responded immediately when we learned the “closet” needed replacements for socks, underwear and shoes. Thanks to her committee the “closet” is again well stocked and is ready for Granbury ISD nurses to provide these needed items to children they see every day.

Thanks to Barbara Gray-Williams and all the volunteers who rang the bells for the kettle program the first three Saturdays in December. We had an outstanding response! The first Saturday approximately $350 was collected. I told the ladies working the second Saturday they had a goal to meet. Well, they not only met the goal, they exceeded it! The second Saturday, they collected approximately $500 from our kettles at Kroger’s and Brookshire’s. And, on the third Saturday, approximately $400 was collected. Great job ladies and husbands!

And what can I say about the outstanding luncheon committee? Linda Silver’s home was decorated beautifully and a delicious lunch was served to forty-three ladies.  What a wonderful, festive time! Again this year, members donated to our projects in the amount of $980!!!

Under Donna Thorstenson’s direction, Salvation Army Women’s Service League volunteers worked at the Christmas for Children distribution on December 14. And still, we were not finished!!! Shirley Anderson, Elaine Tompkins, Sandra Little, and Carrie Bellamy organized volunteers to deliver monogrammed blankets to elderly residents of four nursing homes. I have heard from many of these volunteers and they were touched by the appreciation shown to them by these residents. On a personal note, my husband participated in the blanket distribution and has returned to visit one of the men he met that day. What a blessing we can be to others less fortunate than ourselves.

On December 17, Amy Russell, Kay and David Newman, Joyce Brock, and Charlotte Andreas met me with smiling faces at Wal Mart. Remember, this is Wal Mart on the Saturday before Christmas!! We shopped until we dropped and bought clothing, toys, and food for three families in Granbury recommended to us by the prison ministry office of the Salvation Army. What a joy it was to deliver these items to these families. They were overwhelmed with joy and gave us many thanks and hugs. One woman told me her family would not have had a Christmas without the Salvation Army donations to her family.

God has been so good to each of us. We are so blessed; thank you for remembering those in our community who have greater needs than ours. We are making a difference!

Happy New Year!!

REMINDERS

No general meeting in January. However, the Board will meet at 10:30 am at DCBE on January 10, 2012. Please, everyone, plan on staying for lunch.

Send your check for $27.00 to Donna Noyes, 3808 Fairway Dr., Granbury, 76049 by February 7, 2012 for the field trip to Camp Hoblitzelle in Midlothian, Texas. We will be taking a bus and will have lunch at the camp. This will be in lieu of our February meeting. We will meet at 9:00 am at DCBE parking lot on February 14, 2012.

Our regularly scheduled meeting will be March 13 at DeCordova Country Club. Our speaker will be Rhonda Rogers.

Projects for spring: Inventory of the “closet”, selection of campers and completion of paperwork for camp applications.

CONDOLENCES

Our heartfelt sympathy goes to Libby Lanzara whose husband, Mike, passed away December 17, 2011. Mike and Libby were responsible for the Brazos River Corvette Club donating the proceeds of their silent auction to our Women’s Service League. Mike was a dedicated supporter and so proud of the $11,000 they raised for our group. He will be deeply missed.  Pray that the Lord will comfort Libby and her family with His peace, surround them with His love, and encourage them with His presence.

NEWSLETTER, December, 2011

Christmas Greetings to all!

It’s hard to believe Christmas is just around the corner. I hope you will take time during this busy season to “give back” to those in greatest need. Thank you for all you do to make Hood County a better place. Our organization has purchased socks and underwear, shoes, lap blankets, and raised over $12,000 since September. WOW!! Congratulations, ladies!

When you receive this newsletter, the kettle program will be in operation at Brookshire’s and Kroger’s grocery stores. Be sure to thank these merchants for allowing us to place our kettles in the front of their stores.  Your Women’s Service League volunteers will be collecting donations the first through third Saturdays in December from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Come by and offer your support!

I hope to see each one of you at the Christmas luncheon on December 13. Remember all you have to do is RSVP; the luncheon committee is giving back to the membership by preparing all the food. I’m looking forward to the delicious lunch they are preparing. I’ve heard there will be homemade rolls.

We will have a sign- up sheet at the luncheon for the field trip to Camp Hoblitzelle in Midlothian. We will be taking a bus and have lunch there on February 14. Remember we need thirty people to go. If you have not seen this camp you will want to see where our Hood County campers will be going this summer. It is truly an awesome experience for these children who would not have an opportunity to attend this Christian summer camp.

I wish each one of you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. You have blessed me in so many ways with your enthusiasm, dedication, and volunteer spirit.

Your President, Sally Timmons

P.S.  Barbara needs one or two members to be at Brookshire’s to ring the kettle on December 17 from 12:00 to 2:00.  If you can be there, please let her know by emailing barbarajo@charter.net or phone her at 817-736-8047

CHRISTMAS LUNCHEON, Tuesday, December 13, 11:00 am

Linda Silver’s Home, 1118 Lady Amber Ct.

The wonderful luncheon committee has taken care of all the

food and drink so you just show up and enjoy!

Donna Noyes will be taking reservations thru December 7.

Email:   rondonnoyes@yahoo.com or phone 817-736-2999.  Please be sure to let her know you will be there.  We need an accurate count so the luncheon committee will be able to plan the food efficiently.

Service Projects

The throw blankets are all monogramed and ready to be given to the four team leaders.  We do not want to distribute the blankets until the second week in December, but they will all have to be wrapped.  That means we need volunteers to help with that as well as those that signed up to deliver them to the nursing homes.  Donna Thorstenson and her team leaders will be getting in touch with everyone who signed up sometime in the next week.

Brenda Mabery, from GISD, called and requested some emergency socks and underwear for certain sizes. We were able to accommodate her and all items, including some shoes, were delivered to the “closets”.  We will need to do an inventory the third or fourth week in January to make sure we have enough items to see us through the end of the school year.  More information to follow.

There will be a meeting soon regarding the distribution of Christmas for Children presents for all of you that volunteered to help.  Susan Frost, head of the project this year, will also need assistance prior to distribution date so watch for an email concerning dates and times for that.  The Christmas for Children headquarters are located at 301 Hannaford, right behind Decker Gym near the Square.  So if you have any extra time, contact her at susanfrost3@yahoo.com  .

                           Sign up for Camp Hoblitzelle

We will once again be visiting Camp Hoblitzelle, the wonderful camp for needy children sponsored   by Salvation Army on February 14, 2012.  Our last outing was a huge success, so be sure to join in the fun.  We will be taking a bus so that no one has to drive.  Cost is $37 which includes lunch and the bus ride to and from.  Sign up at the Christmas luncheon.

NEWSLETTER, November, 2011

President’s Message

It’s that time of year when our thoughts turn to the many blessings we have as Americans. We are thankful for our freedoms, our military, our friendships, and our families. I am especially thankful this year for our Salvation Army Women’s Service League. We have achieved much success in three short years; our membership continues to grow, our contributions continue to grow, our members share their gifts with servants’ hearts, and our community is a better place to live because of our accomplishments.  I am thankful for each one of you and you have blessed me in so many ways.

Donna Thorstenson and her committee are busy preparing lap blankets for distribution during the holidays. Linda Silver and her committee are planning the Christmas luncheon for December 13. Barbara Gray-Williams is seeking volunteers for the kettle drive beginning in December. All of these activities require additional volunteers. That is what makes our organization so special – there is room for everyone to volunteer their time and talent.

I hope to see you at the next meeting on November 8, at 10:30 a.m. at DCBE. Come at 10:00 for a social time. We will have a speaker this month, Rhonda Rogers, from United Way. We will also have a sign-up sheet for the Camp Hoblitzelle field trip on February 14.

I am looking forward to visiting with you at the next meeting.

HUGE SUCCESS!!

From Libby Lanzara:  “I want to thank the 16 members of the Fundraising Committee for meeting and working for months to solicit donations, including throughout the summer, and working hard the day of the event.  You got, bought, and devised wonderful things for people to bid on. Thanks to all our members who came early the day of the auction to decorate tables and others who were there to lend a helping hand when needed.  Along with the Corvette Club silent auction committee that also worked really hard for months, you made it really happen!  We raised within 5 bucks of $11,600!  As you well know, the money  will go for really great projects for those in need in Hood Co.  We can all be proud that we will have a hand in making it a bit better here.”

Items include restaurant gift certificates, gift certificates for various beauty and spa services, quilts, paintings, jewelry, automotive services, and much, much more. Bring your friends and family and enjoy a day on the historic Granbury Square. A checkbook would be nice too!

There are many opportunities to serve this year. If you haven’t signed up yet, you still have an opportunity. We need people to distribute lap blankets to elderly residents at four nursing facilities in Granbury, assist with distribution at Christmas for Children, help Linda Silver plan the Christmas luncheon, ring the bell and “man” the kettles, and that is work that needs to be accomplished before Christmas! There is room for everyone! Please come and decide where you want to volunteer.

Our next meeting will be at DeCordova Bend CC at 10:30 am on October 11, 2011. Let Donna Noyes know if you will be staying for lunch (rondonnoyes@yahoo.com or phone 817-736-2999). I look forward to seeing all of you at the Car Show/silent auction on October 8 and at our regularly scheduled October meeting.

Your president, Sally Timmons

Report from Libby Lanzara on the BRCC car show, October 8:

Crunch time!  Twenty five women on two committees from both the Salvation Army and the Brazos River Corvette Club have worked for 4 months procuring almost 150 items worth about $18,000.  It is time to come out from 10 to 2 on Saturday October, 8 and bid and buy!  Wear your t shirts if you have one, bring your friends and family.  The kettle will be there for donation and Barbara has a team working it. The rain date is the next day Sunday Oct. 9.

Thank you to everyone who got something to donate and thanks to those who will be there between 7:30 and 8:00 Saturday morning before our silent auction to decorate and bring their items in.

There are wonderful items to bid on – jewelry, art, quilts, food, automotive, home and garden, entertainment, etc.  See you on the 8th!

Membership Chair, Linda Frost:

This is a reminder that we still have members that need to pay their annual dues of $25.00.  Please send your check to Linda Frost, 4019 Crescent Dr., Granbury 76049.  Call Linda if you are unsure whether or not you have paid at 817-326-6202.

Salvation Army Shirts for Sale: We now have black, Salvation Army, polo type shirts for sale for $20.00. The sizes are M, L, XL, 1Xl and 2Xl. They should be here this week before the fundraising event. Call Sally Timmons or Linda Frost to order a shirt.

Donna Thorstenson, Vice President of Projects reports:

It seems while I was in and out of the hospital this month, some very busy bees were working hard on a couple of our projects.  As agreed upon by our Board Members, the Christmas Blankets have already been ordered and should be here by October 8th. Several of our members have already agreed to be on this committee, but we need more people to help wrap and deliver them.  If you are interested in wrapping the lap blankets and delivering them by the 2nd week of December, we could use your help!  We also need four volunteers to “head up” this effort at the four different nursing home locations. If you are willing to coordinate this effort at one of the four locations call me at 817-326-1413.

Thanks to your Board, we were also able to help Brandon Davis who lost everything in a house fire last month.  Thanks to all of you who reached out to help him.  This is why we are here!

NEWSLETTER, September 2011

Wow! Your Executive Board has been busy this summer! We have interesting programs scheduled; a fundraiser planned for October 8th, and service projects already underway.

Please plan to attend the Membership Coffee at DCBE on September 13 at 10:30 am. If you haven’t paid your $25.00 dues, you can pay them at that time.  They help support our ongoing service projects. Even if you can’t attend, mail your check to Membership Chair, Linda Frost, at 4019 Crescent Drive, Granbury, Texas, 76049.

Donna Thorstenson, our service projects vice-president, is working with the Salvation Army service representative to order socks and underwear for needy children in Granbury ISD.

Donna Noyes, our programs vice-president, has programs and menus planned for the year. We will be taking a trip to Camp Hoblitzelle in February and will have speakers during the year who can relate to you the specific needs of our community.  Linda Silver has graciously offered to host the Christmas Luncheon at her home in December.

Libby Lanzara and Barbara Gray-Williams, co-vice-presidents for fundraising, have been working tirelessly all summer on the October 8 fundraiser and kettle program. Save the date on your calendar and come to the square to bid on those fabulous items in the silent auction. Remember, the Salvation Army Service League receives all the proceeds.  We are so grateful to the Brazos River Corvette Club for their generous donation!

I hope you have had a wonderful, restful summer and are eager to come back ready to serve those in the most need in our community. I look forward to seeing you at the membership coffee and hope you can stay for lunch.

Your president, Sally Timmons

Special Report from Libby Lanzara on Silent Auction w/BRCC

Two committees, one each from the Brazos River Corvette Club and one from the Salvation Army, have worked hard all summer to come up with well over 100 items for our Saturday, Oct. 8th fundraiser.  Remember this is during the 6th annual BRCC Corvette charity car show on the Square benefiting the Salvation Army Women’s League of Hood County.

Great items to bid on include jewelry, food certificates, items for your home or garden, automotive (bring those guys!), artisan dolls, health and beauty items, and entertainment.  Some entertainment packages include a night in the Ft. Worth Stockyards with hotel stay at the Stockyards Hotel and tickets to Billy Bobs, an overnight stay in Fredericksburg, and a weekend package of room, golf/cart, and brunch at DeCordova. Sporting events include tickets to next season’s Texas Rangers.  There are also paintings, quilts, and gift baskets. Several of our intrepid committee have even secured outright monetary donations as part of their silent auction quest!

Be sure to have Oct. 8th on your calendar; plan to be there, turn out your friends and family, and of course, bid and buy!
